Protecting yourself from wildfire smoke and ash:
Wildfire smoke and ash can pose serious health risks, including respiratory issues and toxic exposure. Here are key tips to stay safe:
- Monitor air quality: Check real-time air quality reports and follow local advisories to determine when it’s safe to go outside.
- Use an N95 mask: Standard cloth masks won’t filter out fine particulate matter—opt for an N95 or P100 mask for better protection.
- Improve indoor air quality: Use air purifiers and avoid activities that add to indoor pollution, like burning candles or vacuuming without a HEPA filter.
- Be aware of toxic debris: Wildfire ash may contain asbestos and other hazardous materials, particularly from older buildings. Avoid disturbing ash and use protective gear if cleaning.
