Join Fulcrum Arts and the Williamson Gallery at ArtCenter on Thursday, June 24, 4:00pm (PST) for a LASER talk with artist Julia Christensen, LACMA Art + Technology Lab Program Director Joel Ferree, ArtCenter Senior Curator Julie Joyce, and JPL A-Team advanced concepts manager Steve Matousek.
For nearly a decade, artist Julia Christensen has studied how “upgrade culture”—the perceived notion that we need to constantly upgrade our electronics to remain relevant—impacts institutional archives and operations, long-term scientific research and our personal lives. Works in the exhibition follow the trajectory of Christensen’s ongoing endeavors at the intersection of art and technology, from an e-waste processing plant in India to her meetings with scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to discuss concepts that transcend obsolescence. Featuring nearly 50 artworks from multiple bodies of work, Upgrade Available also includes series recently completed in dialogue with LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab and JPL’s Innovation Foundry.
Julia Christensen: Upgrade Available, on view at the Peter and Merle Mullin Gallery at ArtCenter College of Design through July 4, 2021, is co-presented by ArtCenter Exhibitions and LACMA Art + Technology Lab, and accompanied by a book (of the same title) by Dancing Foxes Press.
